Internalized racism as practiced by Black, Indigenous and people of color manifest in numerous forms to include colorism and hue antagonism. Each of these forms are rooted in the historic underpinnings of American state and federal policies like the One Drop Rule (e.g. determined who was Black) and Native Tribal Blood Quantum otherwise known as “Certified Degrees of Indian Blood.” The former policy was used to exclude Black people from voting, owning land and even reading, while the latter was applied as a benchmark to determine which Indigenous people were able to hold tribal membership and lands. Regardless, the pursuit of White adjacency has led to the loss of Indigenous languages, the devaluing of African traditional customs and the transgenerational sharing of relevant cultural counterstories.
