In 1934, the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) began the process of redlining, which according to The Color of Law book mandated legal segregation by denying the insuring of mortgages in communities that were populated by African Americans. Furthermore, the FHA subsidized companies that only built White subdivisions by requiring that no homes were to be sold to Blacks. The first modern suburb, Levittown in Long Island New York state, is the quintessential example of how to build transgenerational wealth by exclusively gatekeeping opportunities to purchase prime investment property. This lack of inclusivity in home buying currently contributes to a racial wealth income gap that finds Black women facing a 90% wealth gap between themselves and White men (Goldman Sachs, 2021).
