When Black, Indigenous and people of color use the term “Playing the game” it typically refers to actions that are required in order to be successful within their work environments. As they rarely perceive themselves as having the option to “fake it until you make it”, they quickly attempt to learn the hidden rules of as told to them by White co-workers. These persons understand what constitutes acceptable behavior, which includes speech enunciation, proper hairstyles, appropriate dress codes and timeliness framed as earliness to meeting is expected. Each of these items are viewed as professional when done correctly and if not can have catastrophic when compliance is not shown. As of July 2021, 13 states have passed Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair (CROWN) Act, ensure protection against discrimination based on race-based hairstyles by extending statutory protection to hair texture and protective styles such as braids, locs, twists, and knots in the workplace and public schools.
