The Black Lives Matter movement was created in 2013, by Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi, in response to the untimely death of Trayvon Martin (17) by George Zimmerman (37). A year later, in 2014, Tamir Rice (12) was killed by Officer Timothy Loehmann (26). Since then there has been an escalation of police using excessive force with people of African descent, like Breonna Taylor (26), Botham Jean (26) and most recently George Floyd (46) who died at the knee of Derek Chauvin (45). While White male assailants Dylann Roof (27), Robert Aaron Long (21) and Kyle Rittenhouse (18) were each apprehended after killing American citizens, numerous unarmed Black, Indigenous and people of color continue to die during mere traffic stops leaving some to ponder “when compliance does not save you what is the solution?”
